Tuskegee Airmen

$

The Tuskegee Airmen comprised America's African-American flying corps during World War II. Overcoming obstacles created by unthinking prejudice, they made a real contribution to the Allied war effort. Their exploits have been chronicled in several films, including, most recently, "Red Tails." Although not a critical success (40% on Rotten Tomatoes), I found it enjoyable - there's something very satisfying about watching a bunch of black guys kicking some Nazi ass.

The photos are by Toni Frissell.

Georges Dambier was a French fashion photographer. He was one of the first such to photograph models outdoors rather than in a studio. I know this is not my usual fare, but the photos are interesting peeks at the height of 1950s chic.

Photographer and newspaperman Frank Hohenberger spent forty-seven years recording the life, customs, and scenes of the hills of Brown County, Indiana, with side trips and hired assignments in other areas of Indiana, Kentucky, South Carolina, and Mexico. Thousands of images taken from 1904-1948 of landscapes, buildings, and people testify to Hohenberger's belief, recorded in his diary, that "pictures speak the only language all mankind can understand."
